...............EARTH............

Music - recording - modern - rock - alt. - chilled - downtempo -..wait...wait!! Stop talking in tags everyone!!!

Earth - I've finally checked them out. I can see how they inspired Sun [Sunn 0)))]. But Sunn 0))) are so...... SCARY!!!!!!! Earth seem so chilled and relaxed.

EARTH

When I listen to Earth, I hear the tempo of Mono, the chilled burnt grooves of Grails, the wide scape of Sunn 0))).. and the ambience of................. E.. n.. o.......

Oh yeah!!

July 16th, 1945 (Loscil)

I was wondering what happened on that date.. but the music is looping ambience.. incredible..

The aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima
The aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima
The first nuclear weapons were created in the United States by an international team, including many displaced scientists from central Europe, which included Germany, with assistance from the United Kingdom and Canada during World War II as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project. While the first weapons were developed primarily out of fear that Nazi Germany would develop them first, they were eventually used against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The first test was conducted on July 16, 1945 at a site near Alamogordo, New Mexico

Loscil - "Motoc"

Very ambient artist - Loscil. Nice warm bass behind it too. Great for sampling, too, if you're a lazy drum'n'basser!!!

Aphex Twin - "Ventolin"

Classic noise with beats. I think the high pitched noise is supposed to represent the effect of trying to breathe whilst you're having an asthma attack - like you'd only be able to manage a whistle of a breath..

65daysofstatic - "Don't Go Down to Sorrow"

Haunting, powerful, uplifting, emotional

65daysofstatic - "Default This"

Nuts.

Radiohead - Bodysnatchers (live at Later...)

Do Make Say Think.
For those hunting around for music with alternative time signatures, listen to this..

Do Make Say Think - "Herstory of Glory"

It is in 11 time. 11/8 or 11/4.. n0t sure which.. I'm not that well trained but I can hear eleven when I want. Beautiful guitar noise, under produced.. upliftting.. what a great band. This is from their most recent album "A Tender History in Rust"... Think Mogwai, 65DaysofStatic, Tortoise and all that...

Read about them here

The listen to "The Universe!"

Wow!

Breakfast At Sulimays: Estelle, Fuck Buttons, Jamie Lidell

This is clever. Getting some older generation people to review MODERN music....

Brian Eno On Big Musical Theories

"He never fills a silence."

The Thin Blue Line is on TV tonight on More 4. 1120pm I think. The video here is an excerpt of a documentary about Errol Morris. You can see him discuss The Thin Blue Line and Werner Herzog also discussing Morris' brilliance.

"..the blind forces of rage and unreason that drag us into conflict."

“Whoever reads bourgeois newspapers becomes blind and deaf. Away with these stultifying bandages.”“Whoever reads bourgeois newspapers becomes blind and deaf. Away with these stultifying bandages.”

Yes, Trace. You're right. Errol Morris is an amazing dude..

Film director - Thin Blue Line, Fog of War.
TV producer/director - First Person
Writer - as I've just discovered by reading his blog on the ny times.

The title above is taken from the last paragraph of his post about the faked Iranian war missiles photograph. He really hit a note with that last line about the "..the blind forces of rage and unreason that drag us into conflict."

It's the one thing I can see in common between all the wars and conflicts I know about. There's always someone stirring it up in the background, always someone blaming one community or race or country for their own problems. I've started thinking that if it wasn't for this element that dictates to people what they should believe and who they should blame for their problems that there would be no war or wars..

I know that there is still the basic urge that humans have to kill each other which I hope we are slowly evolving away from.. but it takes someone to give people what they think they need - blame - to get their hatred and anger focussed on whichever community is getting blamed at the time or whichever is nearest or weakest.

Errol Morris' long article - I don't want to call it a blog post because it is more than that - about the faked photos resonated with me as it agreed exactly with the conclusions I've come to recently myself.

Here's the link again so you can read it for yourself.

Errol Morris - Photography as a Weapon.

Basically, use your brain, don't believe everything you read or everything you're told, especially as that other person may have read it somewhere anyway..

LOL!

"The only band that perform in the mosh pit...apparently"

Check out a youtube vid of Lighning Bolt on Last FM
This week's "Intense band I've just discovered" of the week prize must go to the crazy two-piece called...

Lightning Bolt. Here's an MP3 of one of the tracks that captured my attention. It has a bit of melody in it. You see - they are intense, frenetic intense drumming, gargled huge distorted bass. They're like Big Business - only more so... and another two-piece I saw supporting Boris last year and in the Meze in Newport a few months ago - can't think of their name.. Bristol band...

Anyway, back to Lightning Bolt........ here's some music of theirs. Just press the blue arrow to "stream" or download and save the file itself.

Lightning Bolt - "30,000 Monkies"

PS If you click the album photo above you'll go to their Last FM page and you'll see a youtube video of them live. Looks like great fun!!

My Bloody Valentine "Thorn" Live Amsterdam '89

Classic bit of footage - almost 20 years old. Classic MBV B-side track.

Cornelius - "Sensuous"

This video is just gorgeous and mesmerising. Just acoustic guitars really with sweet reverb for the music and just sideways flying paintdrops and buttons for the vid. YOu can check out more stuff by him on http://www.last.fm/music/Cornelius/

"Wooden Shjips" We Ask You To Ride

This song is quite Doors-y. But listening to their album is great. Very trippy mostly instrumental music. Never heard of them before last week.

spinal dad should i stay

Go on bruv!!!

Bon Iver -- "Flume"

Wow. It's all I can say about this guy. I downloaded this album and listened to it until I could no more. And then I started again. Something is bringing me back to this music - this beautiful music, this music that aches with emotion - and I want to play it to all my friends - all my friends no matter what style of music they're in to - they will love this - I know cos I've already played it to everyone I can. It seems like just guitar and vocal at first. But there's loads more going on. You need to read the lyrics to really know the level of emotion in this music. I can't cry anymore..

New Order live, 1984, 'Temptation'

BORIS - "My neihbour Satan"

Wow! Simple static, de-focussed live in studio. But their new stuff is developed. Song structures. Huge noise. They've finally arrived. Lots of space.

Boris - "Akuma No Uta"
Oh yeah. Stoner doom intro from hell. Oh yeah baby.

This Mp3 is linked from 3hive

Oh my God I love that site. So much free, legal music organized in a loving way. Wow!! bY THE WAY . This MP3 is only guitar (and FX) but it stands on it's own as an incredible piece of music. The tone of the chords hits u from the start. It just spirals into distortion. It is BORIS at their best really. It is an intro to one of their albums. But,..... fuck the album.... just listen to this with your woofer turned up.. By the end your neighbours will have shot u.... PURE NOISE.. MBV EAT YOUR HEART OOOOT!!!

L.S.G. (Oliver Lieb) - "Hearts"

Gotta be one of my favourite, al-time trance tracks too!!. Kind of perfect. It's the syncopation of which you can never get enough.. But also got to note that this is not really a video. Some people use Youtube just to get the music across. So, like this video, it's just a static track title with very high quality MP3 behind it. I'm listening to this on Sennheisers as I type this and it sounds fantastic!!

Right. Toight we're going for a little bit of Dubstep!!!!!

Burial - "U Hurt Me" via mpfrees

This is fantastic music. So spacious and moody. Quite emotional music. It would help to listen to this on something with a nice sound - a big sound system or huge headphones. But it would be good on any speaker size. It's that kind of thing. Yeah!!

Here is a beautiful piece of music. If you liked the last Eluvium track I posted then here is another one! Listened to this earlier on today and I realised how gorgeous this track is. Here's the link to download it with the blue play/preview button.

Eluvium - "An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death"

It's a piano track. Their other stuff is more ambient, looped atmospheres, very dense.

Avalanches - "Frontier Psychiatrist" via batinabox

Old school cut up sample hip hop. Heard this on the radio a few months ago. Great fun!!

DJ Martian

I love the DJ Martian page. Just text. Huge page but it loads fast. Just loads of info and links on free downloads, new music releases. He (I guess it's a "he") covers left-field noise and beats. After I've finished typing this I shall be reading about the new M83 album.

And whlie I've got your interest here is an MP3 for you.

Eluvium - "New Animals from the Air"

The Black Keys - "Set You Free"

Listen to this!! Lovely stuff!! Raw, bluesy, distorted rock.. Like it says on a Youtube comment.. "..the best band you've never heard of."
This MP3 is linked from my MP3 page on delicious.
